For my Battle for Middle-earth2 mod: I do not want to borrow from other mods

Yes, my real nickname is Perkino. Yes, my modder name in the Battle for Middle-earth 2 modding circles is Emperor of the East. And yes, this is my alternative Main Menu blueprint. Oh and yes, ‘My Heroes’ will be renamed ‘Generals’ in the main menu for E.O.T.E.

This Mod made for this game that will likely be 12 years aged by the time I can release Beta 1 of my Mod?

Yeah, this is a very special public announcement! Frankly, I must confess to you guys first, and then the friends I told in person, something epic. I have absolutely no desire to take anything from anyone else’s mods. Basically, the story goes like this. I used to want to borrow models and textures and even code from my favorite mods, which are listed like this.

  • Age of the Ring
  • RJ-RotWK 1.06
  • Edain Mod
  • Special Extended Edition

So yes, these are the mods I wanted to borrow from. But I changed my mind. Instead, I want to be totally original about my new models and new textures. The only new animations I will be adding will be for the new buildings that I make. Makeovers will be all over the place in this mod. Every Mordor building, for example, will get a makeover to match the architecture of the Mordor Fortress, and also of the game’s Dol Guldur map. Only the Haradrim Palace and Mumakil Pen are exempt from this. Those and the units they produce will be moved into new faction ‘Empire of the East‘.

Any new content that is not simply makeovers?

Yes, absolutely! Two new factions get added to this game by this mod:

  • Rohan
    • Yellow haired, Blue eyed pale humans who happen to be the most excellent horse riders in the Lord of the Rings mythology. Yes, that’s the mythos this game and this mod for it are based on. My Rohan faction will have several different options of cavalry but its only infantry option will be its equivalent to the Ithilien Rangers of the Gondor faction. These will be called ‘Yeoman Militia’ Otherwise, it will be all cavalry units and the only other exception will be an artillery unit called the ‘Yeoman Trebuchet’. All other troop types are things like Rohirrim fencers, archers, jousters, axemen, taskmasters [can toggle between archery and lancing], and Royal Guard [mounted by default but can dismount and remount interchangeably].
  • Empire of the East [named in-game as ‘E.O.T.E.’]
    • Black haired, Brown eyed tan humans who field plenty of different kinds of troop types. These range from an enormous slew of differently armed Easterlings, Variags of Khand as in horsemen who can do archery and jousting and footmen who can do archery and fencing. Corsairs of Umbar and even the three different Haradrim troop types [spear throwers for bfme1, archers for bfme2, horsemen for rotwk] EA Games created for the BfMe anthology as a whole, too. And yes, this will be the faction to go to for the Mumakil who will be 220% bigger in Scale and allowed to carry any infantry you want as long as its normal human infantry. Also, there will be Hill Trolls of Far Harad and Snow Trolls of the Orocarni Peaks.

Anything else to brag about before programming it in?

Actually, yes there is! Frankly, I will alert everyone to one more thing before this blog post ends. New Ring Hero system!

For those who don’t know, Ring Heroes you unlock by finding Gollum on your map of choice, finishing him to get the One Ring, and you put the Ring into the Fortress to recruit the most epic hero your faction can.

But in Empire of the East, rather than limit these epic heroes to Galadriel or Sauron, will make the Ring Hero system like this:

  • Gondor’s Ring Hero = Isildur
  • Rohan’s Ring Hero = Eorl the Young
  • Elven Ring Hero = Galadriel
  • Dwarven Ring Hero = Thorin Oakenshield
  • Isengard Ring Hero = faction hero Saruman gets automatically leveled to 10, and only with the One Ring can he toggle between normal command set vs the ‘Saruman the Colorful’ command set.
  • Mordor Ring Hero = Dark Lord Sauron as known from the LOTR movies
  • Goblin Ring Hero = Smaug the Golden Dragon
  • Easterling Ring Hero = Gorthaur [Sauron as the sorcerer he was in The Silmarillion]

Preventively Answered Questions on my Bfme2 mod, “Empire of the East”

Yep, another update about my mod for the old RTS game Battle for Middle-earth 2.

What up!? Because with me I am someone who happens to be working on a mod for this real-time strategy game that I grew up with since 2006 when I was twelve. However, before I preventively answer questions that I can imagine people asking me, I must teach a brief history with my relations with this game.

Basically, where to begin, I ask myself? Hm, how about this! I first stumbled upon Battle for Middle-earth 2 as a real time strategy game with genuine Lord of the Rings licensing, both movie wise and book wise. Frankly, the advertising made it look to me like it was basically the Tolkien version of a Historical Fiction strategy battle video game that came out the same year with similar gameplay style in mind, “Medieval 2 Total War“. However, when I dug into it Bfme2 as its normal self, no mods, Bfme2 turned out nothing like it. Instead, I got a wishy washy Real Time Impulsivity game, as I call it’s gameplay style. Because firstly, why is it that I need to worry about 10 knights using swords to tear down a farm that’s made of solid iron in 7 seconds? Yeah, this was the number one frustration source for me, the insanely weak everything.

But then I came across many mods, my favorite so far being the Special Extended Edition, the playable version of which ATM is beta 4.5, being the platinum beauty of this time.

Time for the PAQ!

  1. Will this be a re-mod of Special Extended Edition beta 4.5?
    • Only if the SEE team allows me to make ‘Empire of the East’ a re-mod of this kind.
  2. Why the name ‘Empire of the East?’
    • Because my very first social media site joining was in 2008 to the social media site ‘Revora Forums’ under the username ‘Emperor of the East’, nine years later I finally figured out that’s the name to base my mod’s name on!
  3. Will there be a Rise of the Witch-King version of this mod?
    • For those who do not know, Rise of the Witch King is a Bfme2 expansion pack that tweaks a few things about Bfme2 to make it slightly better.
    • In answer to this question, if I am able to get Parallels with Windows 7 Ultimate onto my MacBook Pro before starting my online courses from Manchester Community College, then yes there will be a RotWK version.
  4. What will the factions be for this mod, linked to the Tolkien Gateway pages for the factions they’re based on?
  5. Any other factions besides the ten listed right above?
    • Nope
  6. Is ‘Empire of the East’ borrowing any visual aesthetics from the ‘The Hobbit’ movie trilogy on top of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy?
    • Yes
  7. What if you are not able to do new models or new textures as good as some longer-standing peer of yours at T3A?
    • I will ask the permission of whoever to recycle whatever and even promise to credit the exact modeler or texture-doer or whoever.
  8. When do you think you will release Empire of the East out to the world and where?
    • My 25th birthday which will be May 6th of 2019, and I will upload it to this very blog, under the ‘One Mythos to Rule them All’ folder, and link to it all over ModDB and all over T3A too.
    • As for whether this mod will have its own site within the ModDB site like longer-standing mods do, the answer is simply Yes.

My Idea of Painting Easterlings; a Games Workshop related post.

Easterlings, the Men of Rhûn. Fictional humans from Lord of the Rings, these are.

Games Workshop’s LOTR Game and my favorite army in this game.

Okay, who are the Easterlings? And what is Games Workshop? Basically GW is a company that does tabletop miniatures for Turn Based Strategy board games. Specifically, TBS board games that are centered around one of three mythologies called Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40k, and Lord of the Rings. Basically I am someone who engages in the third of these as a player of one of the Forces of Darkness, a human force called the Easterlings.

To give you backdrop on who these humans are

Paraphrasing the Chris Smith LOTR book ‘Weapons and Warfare‘, and throwing in corrections of Smith’s narrative accordingly to Tolkien lore, the Easterlings are human beings who refused to join the Elves in migrating to a mystical land called Beleriand in the Far West during the First Age. Rather, these humans remained in the land named Rhûn and Rhômen in respectively Elvish and Valarin [in Middle-earth Valarin is the language of the Demigods and Angels, called the ‘Valar’ and ‘Maiar’ respectively]. Here in this land they established an empire run by Kings via grand cities which are packed with splendid temples. These humans were a proud people, with a purely militaristic caste system that set laws in place to keep the hierarchy from the bottom-up like this. Sapper, Infantryman, Horseman, Charioteer, Captain, War-priest, King.

After the First Age ended and the Second Age began, the Men of Rhômen came into contact with the Men of Nûmenôr, and thus mutually beneficial trade began. However, the corrupt king Ar-Pharazon started having many thousands of Easterling civilians enslaved for sacrifice to the Valar. The Valar very viciously objected to this by sinking Nûmenôr and the Easterlings were much more vicious in objecting. For when Sauron, the Dark Lord, came to the Easterlings and offered to allow them to massacre all the friends of Gondor they can find but first they have to pledge to servitude to him, the pledged instantly.

After the destruction of Sauron and Mordor, Aragorn the new king of Gondor decided to pardon the Easterlings provided they respect the Fourth Age ‘days of peace’. Some Easterling cities refused to, but those were subdued by the respectful Easterling cities with leadership by Aragorn and the 4th Age’s first Rohan King, Eomer.

Okay, I am going to cut off the back drop there.

How I am painting mine

I like my techniques to be much smarter than one layer for each area, but also simpler than the six-layer-per-area means Games Workshop markets as epic win. Basically my means is a three-layer process involving only three categories of Citadel Paint.

  1. Base
  2. Shade
  3. Dry

And what order I apply them in varies by area.

Armor Areas of the models

Now, based on the same book I pulled my backdrop from above, the Easterlings are covered with a multi-small-part suit of armor. Putting helmet, collar, breastplate, groin-guard, rerebraces, vambraces, cuisses and poleyns together from Bronze.

To simulate the Bronze, I decided on this method.

  1. Screaming Bell
  2. Agarax Earthshade
  3. Golden Griffon

Fabric Areas

Apparently the Easterlings wear their fabrics dyed red, indigo and black. Funny thing about the indigo I recently discovered that it’s a form of blue, not of purple, after buying a purple from each of the Base, Shade & Dry menus. Oops.

Anyhow, here’s for the red.

  1. Mephiston Red
  2. Astorath Red
  3. Carroburg Crimson

And for the indigo.

  1. Naggaroth Night
  2. Lucius Lilac
  3. Druchii Violet

Lastly the black.

  1. Abaddon Black
  2. Dawnstone
  3. Nuln Oil

Blades and Arrow-heads

It’s told in the Weapons and Warfare book that Easterlings’ blades are of Steel. So…

  1. Leadbelcher
  2. Nuln Oil
  3. Necron Compound

Wooden stuff

From the wooden plating on shields, to the shafts of pike, bow and arrow, I’m doing this:

  1. Rhinox Hide
  2. Verminlord Hide
  3. Agarax Earthshade

Faces

Now, this is going to be a tricky one! Basically I am relying almost only on Base paints for this one, putting in the eyes after step 2 of the armor bit.

  1. A step-1 color from ‘Fabric Areas’ for face veil
  2. Ratskin Flesh for skin
  3. Ceramite White for eyes’ mantles
    • Warpstone Glow, the only Layer Paint, for outer cores [irises]
    • Abaddon Black for inner cores [pupils]

Horses

This I am breaking into two lists. The hide painting list and the hair painting list.

  • Hide color = Wood painting means
  • Hair and Hoof color = Black Fabric painting pattern
  • Eye color = same as human riders

Chariots

Yep, you read that right. I am going to take Khandish Charioteer models and stick a randomly selected Easterling infantry model into each chariot, in place of each Khandish guy. Rider and Mount will function respectively like Easterling Warrior, Captain or War Priest; and like Khandish chariot. But here’s how I am painting the mounts in the case of Chariots:

  • Horses = see ‘horses’ above
  • Chariot wheels = see ‘wooden stuff’ above
  • The bear-headed part the Easterling goes in = see ‘Fabrics’ above
  • Skull decor = see ‘Armor’ above
  • Chariot T-bar = see ‘Blades’ above

Bases

Just this last bit then we can be done talking Citadel Paints. For now.

  1. Agrellan Badland
  2. Agarax Earthshade
  3. Skrag Brown for the rim
